Toyota says that it will build at least 200 new cars and trucks with electric motors this year, with three million units being built globally.
In a video, Toyota Chief Executive Officer Akio Toyoda said the company plans to increase the number of electric vehicles by more than 500 million units globally this year.
Toyota said it plans the electric cars to be on sale in the next five years.
Toyota has already announced plans to produce 100,000 electric cars a year from 2019.
Toyotas sales in the U.S. have declined since last year, but Toyotas global sales have grown as a result of sales in China.
The company’s sales have also grown more in Asia, with sales in Japan up 15% from a year ago.
Toyoda said during a conference call with analysts on Tuesday that Toyota is committed to continuing to drive its momentum globally, and he added that he expects to see more than 150 million electric vehicles on the road in 2018.
